Often in community work, a nonprofit’s efforts do not add up to the change being sought. Nonprofit leaders too often keep working on a problem they’ve identified with increasing frustration, wondering if a solution is even possible. This event will help participants learn about how to solve problems through a collaboration that unleashes a community to help. It will address the nature of relationships that lead to a collaborative atmosphere, how best to utilize technology to serve the work of collaboration, why collaboration unleashes a community, and how to faithfully foster the journey of a shared community vision.

Mapping Your Success: Strategic Communications

All nonprofits need to have a marketing plan for their services that includes measures of success. Trainer Leslie A.M. Smith of McCormick L.A. Public Relations will lead this workshop, which is both a stand-alone and part of a series. The workshop will help nonprofits create a marketing plan that attendees can put to use right away. Class participants will have homework to do later and are expected to participate during the workshop. Once marketing objectives are devised, they can be achieved strategically. Deliberate communication is the key to success and will help leaders position the organization to attract desired target markets. The workshop has four specific objectives: 1/how to devise multiple ways to map out objectives strategically; 2/how to decide whether the strategies that work best for an organization are tried and true or completely unique to the particular nonprofit and the services it provides; 3/how to create strategies that support objectives and put the organization on the right track; and 4/ how to monitor and assess strategies to see what accounts for success or challenges.

AI for an Equitable World: How Your Organization Can Approach AI Responsibly

NTEN leaders Amy Sample Ward and Tristan Penn will lead this workshop, which is designed to help nonprofit leaders determine whether and how to use AI in their organization’s work. In many cases today, nonprofit staff are already experimenting with AI tools, but without a coherent organizational policy to guide them. NTEN is offering this workshop in partnership with Nonprofit Quarterly, and it will provide an instructive and thought-provoking session useful for anyone in an organization considering the use of AI, including executive directors/CEOs, operations & IT staff, and development and communications staff. The workshop will include review of the foundational terms and concepts of AI; an introduction to NTEN’s AI Framework for an Equitable World; practice in discussing nonprofit AI opportunities or risks in an equitable framework; and using templates and resources provided for building policies and guidelines of a nonprofit.

Today’s troubled world is calling for nonprofit leaders to adapt over and over again in deep ways, and to face a wide variety of challenges. In the midst of constant change, how leaders center is what matters most. Such significant changes are both in the world and in nonprofit organizations, making it more important than ever to gain skills and perspectives about how to lead people through transition. The three main objectives of this two-part learning event are: 1/Understanding better the distinction between change (an event or situation) and transition (a process) and recognize the impacts of both on people in a nonprofit organization; 2/Understanding the “Margin to Center” framework as a way to identify solutions to challenges; and 3/Learning to distinguish between adaptive challenges and technical fixes and how they apply to a change occurring in a nonprofit organization.

Ask a Nonprofit Lawyer: Navigate Nonprofit Legal Issues with Confidence

For this workshop, CalNonprofits is bringing together two of California’s most experienced nonprofit legal minds to address some critical nonprofit legal basics and answer some of the most pressing nonprofit-related legal questions. Eric Gorovitz and David Levitt, both principals at nationally recognized firm Adler & Colvin, will discuss such issues as race-based grant making, privacy and data security, fundraising regulations, and lobbying as it applies to nonprofits. Participants can also help guide the discussion by submitting questions in advance for the speakers. What legal quandaries are keeping you up at night? Is it about your board? Are you 501(c)4 curious? When participants register, they are encouraged to include one or more questions they want the speakers to consider.

Government Grant Proposal Writing: An Overview

Applying for a government grant at the city, county or federal level can be a daunting experience, but can also be an excellent learning opportunity and potentially result in increased credibility as well as resources for a nonprofit organization. This interactive workshop will provide an overview of government grants – from finding potential funding opportunities, registering to apply, making sense of RFPs (Requests for Proposals), planning a project and completing the application process itself. To gain the most from this learning experience, it is recommended that participants have some experience with grant proposal writing, but this is not required. By the end of this workshop, participants will have increased knowledge related to: 1/How government grant proposals typically differ from foundation proposals; 2/Common components of government grant proposals; and 3/How to find appropriate government funding opportunities. The trainer will be AJ King, MPH – Director of Next-Level Consulting, Inc. Sessions also will touch on understanding government Request for Proposals (RFPs); and on developing competitive grant proposals for government funders.
